ABOUT US
Sakaramenta is a social production company; we operate like a business, but have a social goal like an NGO. We are a so called "social business". We have no donors, we are self-sustainable. Most of the profit is used to reach our social goals; to stimulate entrepreneurship, create employment and improve the access to health facilities in Malawi.
The choice to run Sakaramenta as a social business is that in this way we bring social development to Malawi and we stay 100% customer focused. We can only survive if we produce high quality products in an efficient way, according to the demand of the customer. |
THE BUSINESS IDEA
Peter Meijer, a young dynamic Dutchman, was inspired by the idea of making bicycle carts and push-carts while traveling through Southern Africa ( March 2007). When he crossed the border into Malawi he saw a lot of overloaded bicycles, packed with bananas, goats, maize bags or tons of charcoal. He fel in love with the country and decided to explore the possibility of starting up a social enterprise.
START OF SAKARAMENTA
After much research on potential products that might be manufactured, Peter came to Blantyre in February 2009 and started Sakaramenta. The first real development was the CareCar, a bicycle ambulance. NGOs, governments and patients were very enthusiastic and there are currently over 1000 Sakaramenta bicycle ambulances serving villages the length and breadth of Malawi.
In close collaboration with some NGOs and Malawian based companies, Sakaramenta also designed other innovative carts with various purposes such as hand and bicycle carts to transport and sell goods (May 2010). Applications are limitless: farmers can transport their goods more cheaply and young entrepreneurs are inspired to become transport businessmen.
DEVELOPMENT
Sakaramenta expanded their product range with playground, school and hospital furniture. At the present time there is a fully equipped operating factory in Blantyre, where over 20 well-qualified Malawian employees manufacture high-quality product
